About the project

We’re responding to concerns raised by the community about improving visibility and safety on McKean Avenue near Manurewa West Primary School’s crossing in Manurewa.

To improve visibility and pedestrian safety outside the school and make it easier for motorist ability to see parents and their Tamariki approaching to the crossing, we’re planning to introduce time restrictions on a few parking spaces during busy dropping off and picking up times.

The changes we're making in October 2026

  • Introduce “No Stopping Restrictions” from 8:30-9:30am and 2:30-3:30pm, Monday to Friday on the eastern side of 295 McKean Avenue.
  • To clear access and improve visibility, we need to reallocate road space and remove approximately 2 parking spaces during the scheduled restriction times.
  • Outside the pick-up and drop-off times, people can park for longer periods.

Benefits to your community

  • Improves driver awareness. Keeping the area around the crossing clear helps drivers see people who want to cross sooner, so they can slow down and react safely.
  • Improves safety for pedestrians, especially school children. The changes improve visibility at the crossing, making it easier for drivers to see pedestrians waiting to cross. This is particularly important during busy school drop‑off and pick‑up times.
  • Improved safety with minimal impact on residents. Parking restrictions will apply only during school peak times. Outside these hours, on‑street parking will stay the same, helping improve safety without unnecessary disruption for nearby residents.

What happens next

  • Any change to the plan will be updated on this page.

  • It will take one-two days for the installation of the new signs in good weather conditions. We know this may cause some inconvenience, and we will minimise this as much as possible while balancing safety concerns.

  • Please remember to park courteously and look for parking restriction signs. Vehicles parked illegally may receive infringement notices or be towed away.
